"Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints"  Psalms 116:15

We had the rare privilege of having the very first funeral service at a brand new funeral home. The occasion? A funeral of course, but quite different from the "run-of-the-mill" variety Valmor's relatives had previously seen!

Yes, Valmor is now with the Lord and we had the privilege of giving his memorial service, attended by almost all his unsaved relatives. Stefanie, Cynthia and Karina (a good friend) sang special music to the accompaniment of a friend's guitar playing. I (Steve) was able to bring a hard-hitting, evangelistic message based upon Valmor's final testimony of God's love and grace. We thank the Lord for the opportunity to speak of Christ and for the chance to hold out His message of grace and salvation to these people. Surely seeds were planted that day!

After a steady stream of overnight guests for several weeks, we left on a whirlwind, 2000 mile trip and returned to Chapeco about 5 days ago. During the trip, we spent 2 days with friends on the coast, then enjoyed 2 more days on an empty beach a few hours to the north. From there, our wanderings took us up through the giant city of São Paulo, then 4 hours travel north to the home of Dan and Beth Templeton, Sonia's brother and sister-in-law (next door to the "Peniel Bible School").

Soon after arriving and discovering Dan and Beth were still traveling, we received an urgent phone call for help from Beth's mother, Cora Taylor. Living by herself in a small town nearby, Cora (88 years young) had fallen on a recently replaced hip and broken her upper leg in several places. She fell in front of her house and passerbys helped her into a chair and brought her the cordless phone to call for help. We rushed the 3-4 miles to her house and found her sitting in the middle of a crowd of concerned neighbors. She was in much pain, and when the ambulance finally came, Clay (Dan's oldest son, studying at Peniel), Sonia and I accompanied her to the hospital for x-rays. Her orthopedic surgeon left his soccer game and rushed to the hospital to read the x-rays and confirm the fractures. After deciding to return Cora to her home (little could be done for the breaks), Sonia and I spent the next week caring for this dear old pioneer missionary. Dan and Beth returned very late that same night and Cora is now staying out at their home. Pray for them, as all three will have to make some difficult decisions for the future.

We hit the ground running on our return to Chapeco. I literally got out of our car, opened my office door and immediately started working on our 2002 US Federal Income Tax forms, and Sonia met with the bride and groom for a wedding on the following day! We've finally started getting back into the swing of things, but too much seems to accumulate when you leave!

Our trip to the USA is still somewhat in limbo. We are lacking the funds to make it happen, but know the Lord has His timing in everything. We decided to set May 31st as a "cutoff date", so if we do not have the funds for the passages by that time, we will put off our trip until the end of the year (or until 2004).

Happenings:
  • Our Tuesday night Bible students (25 - 30 people, not including children), heard about the death, burial and ressurection of Christ before we left on our "vacation". Some have trusted in Christ and we will be visiting them in their homes to see where they are at and where we go from here. The Thursday night group and Sonia's groups of women in Chapeco and Saudades (Homesick) will hear the Gospel during the next 3 or 4 weeks.
  • God has answered prayer concerning the troublesome unsaved mother of several new believers in São Miguel do Oeste (85 miles from here). She flew to the USA to join her lover in Boston, so her family has finally had some peace from her attacks and slandering lies. The new believers in this family continue to grow in Christ and are drawing others to Him.
  • We had a nice few-day's visit with Dr. Joe and Sandy Heubscher from Chattanooga, TN. and Dan and Beth Templeton. Joe was Dan's professor in seminary, and Dan was Valdir's (the main teacher on my tape series). Everyone took pictures of Valdir's seminary students together with the 3 "generations" of professors. We were also able to have a nice visit with Joe and Jan Sprankle III from Virginia, who were visiting the different Word of Life camps in Brazil. They were chauffeured by the President of Word of Life in Brazil, John Reimer.
  • We have a steady stream of gravel trucks in front of our home now, as they prepare the road and lay down asphalt during the next week or two. PTL, the dust and noise will soon go away and the mud will only be a bad memory.
  • We were able to renew the kid's American passports at the American Embassy in São Paulo. Pretty scary though:  no American flag out front... guards with guns... metal detectors... steel doors with crash barriers. Brave new world of terrorism!
  • The whole family had birthdays (except Dad...) on March 24th (twins: 19 yrs), 25th (Richie: 17 yrs) and April 3 (Sonia: 31 yrs...J  ).
  • Our ministry/family website is working well. If you would like to visit it, please contact me and I will send you the login and password. Some folks do not have web access, so we are still sending this eprayermail out to those folks and to the non-responders to the email survey we sent out.

Prayer Requests:
  • For the salvation of many different people studying the Bible for the first time in this region and throughout Brazil. The Fire is spreading! Fan the Flames! Pray! In an age of unbelief and great sin, God is still calling out a people for Himself before He returns for His Church. We are certainly on the final dash to the finish line, so breath deeply and keep on running...
  • Pray for Stefanie and Cynthia as they seek God's will for their future. Richie will also be finishing his senior year at NTM's Vianopolis High School in 2004, and is starting to look at what lays beyond.
  • Pray for our future plans and needs. We are seeking God's face for each day and for the ministry He desires for us. Opportunities are unlimited, so we need wisdom to chose according to God's perfect will.
  • For the continuing outreach of the tape series. The numbers of tape sets going out is small, but the geographic spread is quite large. We are hearing a steady stream of good reports as to the impact they are having. Pray for us as we help develop short handouts for the listeners to fill in for each lesson tape.
Again we thank each of you folks for your part in our ministry here! We are very conscious of the fact that without those helping us by giving and praying, we could not do what we are doing. We give thanks continually for those standing with us in this battle. Praise the Lord for His goodness and for the work He is doing in the hearts of men, women and children in Brazil! God bless you as you serve our soon-returning King.
